Stunning Places To Visit This Fall, Right Here in the U.S.
The crisp, cooler weather, fewer crowds and vibrant colors sprinkled among the trees, there is just something wonderful about fall. It’s also an ideal time to travel. We’ve rounded up four of our favorite fall destinations, perfect for families, couples or anyone looking to get away, start the new season off right, and maybe even wander through nature.
PARK CITY | utah
SEE Park City, Utah might just be the ultimate fall destination. With crisp, but not yet cold temperatures and activities in town and in nature it ticks off all the boxes. There’s fishing for brown trout in the Provo River, cycling trails along Deer Valley, hot air balloon rides, and guided tours to see the best of the fall colors. When you are done enjoying the vibrant golds and oranges of the trees, try visiting one of the area’s many farmer’s markets, art galleries, or local distilleries trickled along Historic Main Street.
STAY The Lodge at Blue Sky Set on 3,500 private acres, Auberge’s Utah property is just 35 minutes from Salt Lake City Airport. This private ranch sits in the Wasatch Mountain Range, and provides plenty of outdoor activities from guided nature hikes, mountaintop yoga, fly fishing, and horseback riding. If you’re looking for something more low key, they even offer pickling and canning workshops, guided meditation and classes on organic farming. Ideal for families, The Lodge offers multiple-room villas with plenty of space for your crew to spread out. Our favorite are the Earth Suites, that open up to a private terrace overlooking the valley.
JACKSON | wyoming
SEE Jackson Hole is definitely not for the faint of heart. You’ve probably heard the intensity of their famed “expert only” ski slopes, but the offseason can be pretty intense in its own way. There’s white-water rafting and kayaking down Snake River, rock climbing and mountain biking. Not to mention Grand Teton National Park, with over 310,000 acres of land which offers camping, hiking and their aerial viewing tram. The area is home to over 900 species of flowers and 60 different types of mammals. Fall is an ideal season to spot local wildlife before they go into hibernation, local safaris run daily to help you spot everything from black bears and moose to bison.
STAY Amangani In the foothills of the Grand Tetons, Amangani is perched on a hillside that looks out across the plains of the Snake River Valley. This all-season wilderness retreat offers everything from holistic health and healing to heart-pounding thrill of white water rafting and mountain climbing. Each suite has a private terrace, fireplace and mountain views to really embrace the coziness of the season. If you have the entire tribe with you, consider the five-bedroom Patheya Home, complete with its own bunk room, media theater and plunge pool.
BARNARD | vermont
SEE Vermont is definitely a place, but better known by its inhabitants as “a state of mind”. This state revels in outdoor scenery, hearty food, and the careful preservation of the beautiful historic village towns sprawled across the area. Known nationally for its colorful fall foliage that blankets the mountains, the best time to visit is between last September and early October for the most vibrant color. Green Mountain National Forest is also nearby, and welcomes nature enthusiasts all year long.
STAY Twin Farms The only five-star experience located in Vermont, Twin Farms offers an adults-only property that takes full advantage of the outdoors. The property is located just three hours from Boston and five from New York City but feels private and secluded on its over 300 acres. Guests can participate in a variety of activities from canoeing, cycling, Japanese Furo and tennis. Much of the amenities on property are included complimentary, like same-day laundry service to packing and unpacking your suitcase for you. Our favorite space is the Barn Cottage, complete with Scandinavian design, expansive countryside views and soaring 18-foot cathedral ceilings.
WALLAND | tennessee
SEE Once a tiny town in the Smoky Mountains, the Blackberry Name has put this place on the map. The area was already strikingly beautiful, with more hiking trails and climbing opportunities than one could ever hope to complete. The Great Smoky Mountain’s are actually America’s most visited national park, and is the largest protected land area east of the Rocky Mountains. The Autumn season is an ideal time to see this area without the crowds of summer tourists.
STAY Blackberry Mountain This is the place to be, (they have their own magazine!) The word is out, but that doesn’t mean the experience has changed one bit. The sister property of Blackberry Farm, this 5,200 acre space in the Great Smoky Mountains “continues a legacy of world-renowed hospitality and unwavering dedication and appreciation for the land”. Reservations include morning wellness classes, pantry snacks, breakfast and dinner each day in addition to accommodation rates. The property’s “Camp Blackberry” offers supervised daily activities for children while the adults are off hiking, paddle-boarding, rock climbing or fly fishing. The upscale Mountain Homes offer plenty of space for larger groups to gather, but our favorite are the secluded Watchman Cabins built with reclaimed wood, floor-to-ceiling windows and wood burning stoves.
